COT Data

About COTData.uk

A tool built out of frustration, and kept running out of usefulness.

Why this site exists

The CFTC publishes Commitment of Traders (COT) reports every week. The data is free and public. The problem is that it comes as raw CSV files — no context, no history, no way to quickly see whether current positioning is unusual or typical.

Existing tools either paywalled the useful parts, buried the data under cluttered interfaces, or simply didn't go back far enough to be meaningful. So this dashboard was built to fill that gap.

The goal is straightforward: take publicly available institutional positioning data and present it in a way that a retail trader can actually use — with historical context, clear visual signals, and no subscription required.

Who built it

COTData.uk is an independent project built and maintained by a developer with a background in data analysis and an active interest in futures and forex markets.

There is no team, no VC funding, and no editorial agenda. The data comes directly from the CFTC. The calculations are documented. The site earns through advertising, not through selling signals or subscriptions.

What the dashboard shows

The dashboard tracks net positioning for Commercial, Non-Commercial (Large Speculators), and Non-Reportable (Small Speculators) trader groups across major futures markets — currencies, commodities, indices, and more.

Rather than showing raw numbers, the site contextualises positioning using Z-scores, percentile rankings, and moving averages so you can see at a glance whether current sentiment is at an extreme or sitting near its historical average.

Full details on how each metric is calculated are on the Methodology page.

Data source and reliability

All data is sourced directly from the CFTC official reports. The CFTC publishes updated COT data every Friday, covering positions as of the previous Tuesday.

The dashboard is updated automatically after each weekly release. If you spot a data discrepancy, please get in touch.

This is not financial advice

COT data shows what large institutional participants are holding — it does not predict price direction. Positioning can remain at extremes for extended periods. Nothing on this site should be treated as a trading signal or investment recommendation.
