Trader Categories
Non-Commercial Traders (Large Speculators)
This is our primary focus. Large speculative traders including hedge funds, asset managers, and proprietary trading firms. These traders drive market trends and sentiment.
All percentiles, Z-scores, and extremes in our analysis refer to Non-Commercial net positions.
Commercial Traders (Hedgers)
Businesses using futures to hedge business risk: airlines hedging fuel costs, farmers hedging crop prices, banks hedging currency exposure.
Non-Reportable Positions (Small Traders)
Small individual traders and retail accounts below CFTC reporting thresholds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why focus on Non-Commercial traders?
Large speculators (Non-Commercial) tend to be trend-followers and momentum traders. Their positioning often reflects market sentiment and can indicate crowded trades or extreme positioning.
Do extreme percentiles predict reversals?
No. Extreme positioning can persist for extended periods. Historical extremes tell you where we are, not where we're going.
